Who Should Enrol?

Suitable for HSE Officers, Advisors, Engineers, Supervisors and Managers seeking to develop their knowledge and take on greater responsibility. Applicants must be 18 or over and normally hold a relevant health and safety qualification. Mature applicants over 21 with at least two years of practical experience may also be considered. Appropriate English-language competency is required. OSHTREE reviews your qualifications and experience to help establish whether this diploma is the right next step.

Assignment-Based Assessment

Apply your knowledge, not just your ability to recall information. Complete assignments and a supporting portfolio demonstrating your understanding and application of health and safety principles. Assessment is based on meeting each unit’s requirements rather than traditional written examinations. Your work is assessed by the centre, with feedback to support improvement. Assessment decisions are externally verified by OTHM.

Professional Recognition and Career Progression

Progress Towards CertIOSH and CMIOSH This IOSH-accredited diploma meets the academic requirement for Certified IOSH Membership (CertIOSH). Applicants also need at least two years of relevant professional experience and must meet IOSH’s continuing professional development and membership requirements. Certified Members can work towards Chartered Membership (CMIOSH) through IOSH’s Professional Development Assessment. Membership requires a separate application and is not automatically awarded with the diploma. Access the BCSP TSP Pathway OSHTREE’s OTHM Level 6 Diploma is listed by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) as a Qualified Equivalent Program (QEP).   Eligible graduates can apply for the Transitional Safety Practitioner (TSP®) designation, subject to BCSP’s applicable dates and application requirements. This recognition applies specifically to OSHTREE’s listed programme. TSP satisfies the qualifying-credential requirement for the Certified Safety Professional (CSP®) route, removing the need to first pass the ASP examination. BCSP’s separate degree, experience and CSP examination requirements still apply. Continue to Higher-Level Study The diploma can support progression to the OTHM Level 7 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management and relevant postgraduate programmes, subject to the receiving institution’s entry requirements.

Overview

OTHM is a not-for-profit global course provider established in 2003 who awards British qualifications in several sectors including health and safety. Approved and regulated by Ofqual (Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulation), OTHM is a tested and trusted as well as an affordable pathway to a British degree/ Master’s programme.

Level 6 Diploma is aimed at working professionals who are looking forward to progress into a senior role in management of health and safety. This level is equivalent to final year of a British degree. The learners will gain knowledge in legal and regulatory backgrounds of occupational safety. 

A level 6 candidate will accomplish attesting their skills in assessment and further amendment of OHS policy as well as in putting those policies into reasonable and practice.

Entry Requirements

For entry onto the OTHM Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety qualification, learners must possess:

Relevant NQF/QCF/RQF certificate or diploma or equivalent recognised qualification that covers the following basic concepts within Occupational Health & Safety:

  1.  Science and Technology
  2. Legal and regulatory systems
  3. Workplace safety and health
  4. Definitions of risk and risk management principles
  5. Principles and theories of safety and health management
  6. Occupational health and hygiene
  7. Occupational psychology
  8. Information technology, literacy and numeracy

Qualifications that fulfil this requirement include:

  1. British Safety Council Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health
  2. British Safety Council International Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health
  3. NCFE IOSH Level 3 Certificate in Safety and Health for Business
  4. NCRQ Level 6 Certificate in Applied Health and Safety
  5. Mature learners (over 21) with practical experience at least 2 years
  6. Learner must be 18 years or older at the beginning of the course

Equivalences

OTHM qualifications at RQF Level 6 represent practical knowledge, skills, capabilities and competences that are assessed in academic terms as being equivalent level to Bachelor’s Degrees with Honours, Bachelor’s Degrees, Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Graduate Diplomas and Graduate Certificates.

Duration And Delivery

The qualification is designed to be delivered over 4 months approximately for full-time study, but it is also flexible in its delivery in order to accommodate part-time and distance and blended learning.

The qualification is delivered face-to-face, through lectures, tutorials, seminars, distance, online.

Assessment And Verification

All units within this qualification are internally assessed by the centre and externally verified by OTHM. The qualifications are criterion referenced, based on the achievement of all the specified learning outcomes.

 

To achieve a ‘pass’ for a unit, learners must provide evidence to demonstrate that they have fulfilled all the learning outcomes and meet the standards specified by all assessment criteria. 

Judgement that the learners have successfully fulfilled the assessment criteria is made by the Assessor.

Progression

Successful completion of a Level 6 Occupational Health and Safety qualification can support progression into senior OSH roles and may meet the academic requirements for *IOSH Certified Membership (CertIOSH)*, subject to IOSH membership criteria.


Eligible Certified Members can progress through the *IOSH Professional Development Assessment (PDA)* toward *Chartered Membership (CMIOSH)*.

Specifications

How do remote exams work?

There is one multiple-choice knowledge exam and one scenario-based assessment. You must pass both to complete the qualification. Both the exam and assessment are undertaken online and remotely invigilated. 

 

This means you can take them, under exam conditions, at home, work or wherever you are. Remote invigilation takes place online using a specialist exam platform and security software. This gives you flexibility on where you take your exams as long as you have a stable internet connection, but they are delivered using robust procedures just like attending a test centre. You are observed and recorded online using cameras and a shared screen. 

 

Once your exams are scheduled, you will be sent clear instructions on how to prepare and test your equipment ahead of the exam. You will need to have a laptop with a built-in camera, microphone and speakers, along with a smart phone to use the exam platform and remote invigilation.
